What is the Linguistic Security Summit?

The Linguistic Security Summit is a one-time event bringing together education staff and students in grades 9 to 12 from francophone schools in British Columbia. It will be held on March 14th at Simon Fraser University's Vancouver Campus. This project is made possible with the participation of the Government of Canada and the Ministry of Education and Child Care of British Columbia.

The Summit will help strengthen students' linguistic security, equip educational staff with resources, and promote the diversity of French in British Columbia. It also aims to give youth a voice and foster dialogue between youth and educational staff within the French-speaking educational community.

Through a mix of small group activities and full-group sessions, students and educational staff will participate in a dynamic program of fun and creative workshops, conferences, and discussions. Throughout the day, participants will be encouraged to exchange ideas, learn, and work together to create the legacy they wish to offer their community.

Prior to this day, participants will take part in preparatory activities that will enable them to navigate discussions between groups during the Summit in a constructive and engaging manner.

Why this Summit? A little background!

Since 2019, the CJFCB has been a key player in linguistic security in British Columbia, drawing on its community expertise and its approach by and for youth. Its work includes workshops organized by the Linguistic Security Committee of BC, awareness campaigns, and training tools for educators, such as the Guide de démarrage éducatif and the Trousse de formation sur la sécurité linguistique.

The Summit builds on this work and addresses the need for resources available to education staff on linguistic security in minority contexts. It also opens up a unique space for dialogue between youth and members of the education community for the first time.

Educational Staff Cohort

The educational staff cohortof the Linguistic Security Summit is intended for current, former, and future members of education staff of francophone schools in British Columbia. We particularly encourage those who are new to the education sector and/or who have recently arrived in BC to participate, as this Summit directly addresses the challenges encountered when adapting to a minority language context.

Three 60-minute online preparatory capsules will prepare participants for the Summit. These capsules are mandatory and will include:

  • theoretical elements
  • discussions among participants
  • moments of introspection guided by a reflection journal.

The Summit offers a unique opportunity for dialogue, in which participants engage on a personal basis. However, the learning experiences it offers can be transposed to educational settings.

Youth Cohort

The Youth Cohort of the Linguistic Security Summit is for teens and young adults who are currently attending or have completed part of their high school education at a francophone school in British Columbia.

The Preparation Day on March 13th will help youth participants get ready for the Summit. This full day of programming is mandatory and includes:

  • workshops to familiarize oneself with the topic
  • discussions amongst their peers
  • opportunities to socialize.

The Summit offers a unique opportunity for dialogue. Although participation is on a personal basis, the learning gained can be applied in educational settings.
