Linguistic Security Committee
Since its creation in 2019, the committee has been active across the province to engage with the community and raise awareness of issues relating to linguistic insecurity, and above all, its potential impact on language vitality. The committee has also given several workshops across Canada, highlighting the social and linguistic realities specific to British Columbia.
Its members are youth aged 15 to 25 who have been trained and mentored by Dr Suzanne Robillard, who has a PhD in sociolinguistics and is an honorary lifetime member of the CJFCB. As ambassadors for linguistic security, the committee’s mission is to create spaces for dialogue and reflection with community members. To do so, they lead awareness-raising workshops, and develop a variety of resources to support youth and strengthen their linguistic confidence.

WORKSHOPS AND RESOURCES
The first workshops offered by the committee were developed by the founding members in collaboration with Dr Suzanne Robillard. Since then, the workshop’s content has continued to evolve in response to the community’s needs, in consultation with experts in the field and with committee members.
The workshops address the needs and realities of youth growing up in French language minority communities. In order to reach the various communities that play a key role in both identity formation and the development of a sense of linguistic legitimacy, these workshops are offered to youth, student teachers, parents and various community members. In addition, to promote accessibility and help spread their message to a wider audience, the committee develops supplementary awareness-raising resources.
